Work with oil industry wins Ruanui environment prize
Te Runanga o Ngati Ruanui Trust has been declared the joint winner of the action in the community category at this year’s Taranaki Regional Council Environmental Awards.
Chief executive Debbie Packer says her south Taranaki iwi is committed to its role as kaitiaki for the environment.
She says the mahi is driven by beliefs and expectations that have been handed down by generations of Ruanui ancestors.
The award was for the work the trust has put into developing guidelines for the petroleum and minerals industry to engage with Maori.
Other winners were Howard and Janice Hughes, who have been planting native trees in Soldiers Park in Eltham, bird rescuer Dawne Morton, and the Taranaki Conservationists group, which participates in a wide variety of environmental projects in the region.
