Deadline looms in AECT election
A candidate for the Auckland Electricity Consumer Trust says the trust’s annual dividend isn’t as safe as the group now in charge like to claim.
It’s been a low key election, with the only action a complaint against the Citizens and Ratepayers’s tactic of claiming credit for the annual dividend.
Former Auckland Central MP Judith Tizard, who’s standing on the City Vision ticket, says in fact C&R and National Party people are talking about handing the trust’s assets to the Auckland Council, which would end the dividend.
She’s concerned the dividend is actually a reflection of high power bills.
"Sixty percent of Aucklanders say they need that dividend to pay their power bill. Well let's talk about how we get those power bills down, and solar energy is part of the answer, better insulation is part of the answer, and making sure that you know what you are using in terms of energy, so we want better information, better infrastructure, and a better say for everyone, Maori, Pakeha and everyone else in Auckland, let's make sure that our power assets work for everyone," Ms Tizard says.
Voting forms need to be in the mail today or tomorrow so they’re in the hands of the returning officer when the poll closes on Friday.
