Dame Tariana Turia talks with Dale Husband about why she is supporting American hip hop artist Chris Brown visiting Aotearoa
The singer needs a special visa to perform in New Zealand because of a 2009 conviction for beating his partner.
MPs Kelvin Davis and Judith Collins say he shouldn't be let in, but Dame Tariana says rather than ostracizing offenders, there needs to be a debate about attitudes towards rehabilitation.
She believes in forgiveness; in individuals taking responsibility for their actions and then setting out on a path to repair the harm done.
Dame Tariana says Brown expressed genuine remorse, served the sentence handed down to him, and has deliberately sought to make amends through using his profile to speak out about violence.
The artist has recently received joint custody of his daughter for 12 days per month and not have required supervised visitation.
