Kaumatua brought spiritual message to prisons

A Ngapuhi kaumatua is being remembered for his work in the community and in prisoners.
Hone Komene died on Friday and is being taken to Te Iringa Marae near Kaikohe, after lying in state over the weekend at Hoani Waititi Marae in west Auckland.
Fellow kaumatua Kingi Taurua says while he was from the north, the Owairaka man was also a staunch supporter of the Kingitanga.
"Hone Komene contributed to the Kingitanga, his community and the prisons. He said to me that some prisoners in Paremoremo should not be there at all. A lot of them were sick, some had mental problems, they should be in mental hospital, not in prison. So that’s the kind of guy Hone Komene was. He will be sadly missed," he says.
