Traditional owners fighting for the clean-up of Lake Horowhenua are starting their own waka ama and canoe club.
The group has been in conflict with rowing and sailing clubs which use the lake from bases built illegally on Mua-Upoko land.
Organiser Philip Taueki says all ages, races and genders are welcome in the club, which is holding its first meeting at the lake on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Horowhenua Distict Council says work to restore the lake’s environmental health is going well.
Horizons Regional Council, on behalf of the Lake Horowhenua Accord, has applied for resource consents initiatives including a boat ramp to launch a weed harvester.
A boat wash has been built with run-off going to Levin’s wastewater treatment plant, trees have been planted and fences built around the edges, and growers near the lake have developed drainage and erosion management plans to reduce sediment.
