Northern hapu look at options to Tuhoronuku

Ngati Hine meets in Kawakawa tonight to discuss the findings and recommendations of the Waitangi Tribunal report on the Tuhoronuku mandate.
Chair Waihoroi Shortland says the tribunal’s finding that the tino rangatirtanga of hapu must be respected in the settlement process affirms the position Ngati Hine has taken.
He says the hapu wants to manage its own settlement process, rather than have it handled by a body it has never endorsed and from which it could not withdraw.
Bay of Island hapu Ngati Manu also hopes the report will open the door to separate negotiations with the crown.
Spokesperson Arapeta Hamilton says the hapu was unhappy with the mandating process and did not trust the leadership of Tuhoronuku.
