Hunger for Maori books
The shortlist of New Zealand's top Maori books for 2014 announced ahead of this year's Massey University Nga Kupu Ora Aotearoa Maori Book Awards has works on a wide range of subjects.
The 15 books cover a wide variety of topics from a biography of renowned politician Parekura Horomia (Kia ora Chief!) to a book on Maori root vegetables (Rauwaru, The Proverbial Garden).
Assistant Vice Chancellor Dr Selwyn Katene says there is an increasing thirst and hunger for Maori books which the awards now in their 7th year recognise.
He says the primary purpose of the awards is to get people to write about Maori topics particulalrly in te reo Maori and to encourage excellence in writing.
Dr Katene says the winners of the six categories will be announced at a ceremony at Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington on September 10.
