Maori to be part of geothermal development at Ngawha
A Ngati Rangi hapu in the North has formed an agreement with power generator Top Energy which will allow it to be part of geothermal development at Ngawha.
Top Energy is seeking resource consent to expand its power plant at Ngawha and the agreement with the local Ngawha Marae Komiiti which has kaitiaki responsibility in the area will see Maori benefitting from the development.
Ngawha Marae Komiti chairman Richard Woodman says being at the top table with Top Energy in the expansion rather than on the sideline will allow them to be actively involved in ensuring water quality from the stations discharges.
He says they want to ensure that the water coming out of the plant is just as good as when it went in.
The hapu will also benefit from grants including those to educate tamariki who want to proper in the field of geothermal energy.
