Former prison boss supports minister

Former prison boss Kim Workman has come out in support of under-seige Correction minister Sam Lotu-Iiga over his handling of Mt Eden prison.
Mr Workman who as head of the Crime and Punishment organisation has been at the forefront of campaigns for greater recognition of Maori culture in New Zealand prisons he says he can empathise with problems the Minister is facing since private manager Serco's running of the remand facility lept into the public spot light.
Mr Workman says what is being seen at Mt Eden prison cannot simply be put down to Serco's private management but it is the result of the way prisons have been heading for some time.
He says not just at Mt eden but other prisons it has for example become almost impossible to get leave for tangi which is indicitive of the way the prison system is against Maori in particular.
