Private prison ignores Maori rehab

Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox says the country's prisons need to ramp up programmes for Maori, whether they are private or state-run.
Private operator Serco is under fire for its management of the Auckland remand prison at Mount Eden, with allegations of organised fight clubs and prisoners being dropped off balconies.
There arte also complaints it has few Maori staff and little support for Maori programmes.
Ms Fox says Maori focus units and the new Whare Oranga Ake units aimed at reintegrating prisoners to the community have proven their success in reducing reoffending.
"Given the rates of Maori incarceration whether in private institutions or not there should be as a matter of course these programmes available and offered to prisoners. We need to rehabilitate so that we don't have repeat recidivsm and violent crimes occuring either in the prison or out of the prison when they're released" says Marama Fox
