Council axes iwi recycling scheme
Te Runanga o Te Rarawa says the Far North District Council is showing no concern for the well being of the region’s environment or people with its decision to scrap a waste recycling scheme.
Chair Haami Piripi says the Cleanstreams Northland scheme has been extremely effective in changing public attitudes and reducing the wast stream.
Iwi and local community groups have worked together in a cluster of companies to recycle up to 70 percent of the region's waste.
He says it will now be trucked by outside companies to a landfill near Whangarei, with the loss of up to 50 jobs.
The council has given five-year contracts worth $4.6 million each to Northland Waste Limited and Waste Management Limited
