Mana-Maori alliance talks unauthorised
The Maori Party has distanced itself from a hui to discuss an alliance with the Mana Movement.
President Naida Glavish says any Maori Party members will be there in their personal capacity.
She says any meeting between the parties will need to be endorsed by the Maori Party’s national council and executive and to date that hasn’t happened.
Sunday’s hui at Manurewa Marae arose from discussions between Mana’s James Papali’i and the Maori Party Tamaki Makaurau candidate Rangi McLean.
Mana leader Hone Harawira has spoken in favour of an alliance, but many in the Maori Party have still not forgiven him for splitting over the issue of support for National-led governments.
