Ngati Hine seeks understanding with council

Ngati Hine has signed a memorandum of understanding with Far North District Council subsidiary Far North Holdings despite its continuing opposition to extension of the Opua Marina.
Carver Wallace Hetaraka told the signing on Wednesday that more than two decades ago the late Sir James Henare instructed him to carve the pou outside the Opua Hall as a symbol of the way Ngati Hine’s authority over the Taumarere River had been usurped by a body that was deaf to the concerns of the iwi.
He says the MOU was a way to bridge that divide.
Far North Holdings chair Ross Blackman said while he expected opposition to continue, the two parties can now talk about securing the best outcomes for the river.
