Maori art set in steel
A unique set of public toilets in Rotorua’s redwood forest has achieved international recognition.
Architect Darryl Church says making the final six in the World Architecture News Small Spaces Awards is great not just for his firm but for the client Rotorua Lakes Council, which was prepared to build more than just another concrete block.
The cubicles are individual cylinders of corten steel, which as they age have taken on aa patina that harmonises with the surrounding redwoods.
They are shrouded with laser cut patterns depicting native birds designed by local artist Kereama Taepa and chosen through a public design competition.
