Village feel for film festival
An organiser of this week’s Maoriland Film Festival says manaaki for indigenous filmmakers is one of the attraction of the event.
Venues around Otaki including a marae, a carved Maori church, a sports stadium and a 1940s art deco theatre have been pressed into service for film screenings and workshops.
Libby Hakaraia says filmmakers from Canada, the United States, South America, Europe, Australia and the Pacific have come to spend time with Maori colleagues and revel in the village atmosphere Otaki offers.
Libby Hakaraia says it’s also a chance for filmmakers to kick back after the exhausting business of finishing and releasing their projects.
