For the first time the broadcast of all the preliminary day performances were live on television as well as live streaming to New Zealand and Australian internet users.
Chief Executive Paora Maxwell says the broadcast resulted in a highly engaged audience that was broad in terms of Maori and non-Maori, age and location.
More than 30 percent of the online audience was watching from Australia.
The festival was equally successful in attracting younger viewers with 71 percent of Maori Television website users aged between 18 and 44.
