Gray day for Bishop Gray
New Zealand’s three Anglican archbishops have suspended outspoken Christchurch cleric John Gray from his job as bishop of Te Waipounamu while comments he made to an ecumenical gathering are investigated.
It's a further blow for Bishop Gray, who was last week demoted from his role as vicar general to the Maori Anglican Diocese in Aotearoa, which made him deputy and advisor to Archbishop Brown Turei.
The church apologized to Jews and Muslims for his comments, including telling Jews the Holocaust should have taught them a lesson.
Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy said Gray's comments about Jews says it’s important to challenge such comments, because intolerance and hatred starts small – whether shown by speech, violence, or cowardly grave attacks.
