Tiriti support right thng to do
Green Party support for Te Tiriti o Waitangi looks unlikely to change if MP Kevin Hague gets the votes to replace Russel Norman as male co-leader.
Some commentators have tipped Dr Norman’s retirement from the role as a chance for the party to move more towards the centre and position itself as a potential support for Labour or National.
But Mr Hague told Radio Waatea’s Dale Husband that he and female co-leader Metiria Turei both come from strong social justice backgrounds.
He says the Greens haven’t done the equation on whether its treaty policies win or lose votes.
Kevin Hague says his education on the Treaty of Waitangi came about because of his involvement in the 1981 Springbok Tour protests, and he went on to form a group Pakeha Treaty Action and co-wrote a book Honouring the Treaty.
