Hui ask what support carers need
Maori health workforce development centre Te Rau Matatini is on the road talking with Maori working in mental health and addiction services about what resources and further training they need.
Chief Executive Marama Parore says Maori continue to have disproportionate levels of mental illness and addiction, and the support they need is significant.
She says some of the care they get must come from whanau and community, which is why Te Rau Matatini is developing a manaakitanga programme for carers.
Marama Parore says while Te Rau Mataini would like every Maori who needs one to have a Maori nurse, if one isn’t available then whoever treats them should have cultural competency.
