Call for iwi first in state house sell off

The Maori Party wants iwi to have the right of first refusal for any houses being sold off by Housing New Zealand.
The Government intends to sell up to 8000 state houses over the next three years as part of a plan to create a sector of community providers of social housing.
Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox says many iwi have shown an interest in becoming involved with housing with wraparound services for their people.
"If these homes or the land they sit on had been available in redress for treaty settlements, then that land and those homes may have gone into redress packages, so now they have become available I think by all rights iwi should have first right of refusal to purchase those homes and become involved in the social housing provision for our whanau," she says.
