Discipline pays for waka ama
Good beaches, lots of sun, and a committment to excellence.
Thats the recipe for the dominance of East Coast clubs Horouta and Mareikura in last week's ActivePost Waka Ama National Sprint Finals.
Hoturoa Kerr from Waka Ama Aotearoa says what makes the clubs is the intensity of their training.
"They train every day so what that indicates for us is that they take this seriously as a sport. Other clubs just throw a team together and see how it goes. A lot of the paddlers in the top teams are some of the finest specimens of human physique I have seen. People are serious about this," he says.
Mr Kerr says the regatta was notable for the increases in speed and standards across the board.
