Kohanga Reo delegates have asked for time to go back to their rohe to discuss proposed changes to the way their national organisation is run.
Te Kohanga Reo Governance Working Party delivered its report to a national hui at Turangawaewae Marae yesterday.
Nga Tuara Whanui has gone around the country since April soliciting opinions from every kohanga about what should change in the wake of the sacking of a former chief executive and controversy over misspending at a trust subsidiary.
It recommends trustees be elected from the rohe rather than being appointments from life.
However, trustees Iritana Tawhiwhirangi, Timoti Karetu and Wharehuia Milroy would be elevated to a new house of lords, Te Kahui Rangatira, to provide guidance and oversight on kaupapa and tikanga.
Nga Tuara Whanui chair Sir Toby Curtis says there was too much to digest in one hui.
"Each rohe was asked what their situation was and they all agreed it is going back for each rohe to discuss the report in total detail, and it was well chaired and well run and we are all looking forward to next year," he says.
