Rena deal ignored treaty

The Motiti Rohe Moana Trust wants a better response from the Crown to the final report on its claim over the Rena sinking than it gave the interim report.
The tribunal as found the Crown damaged the treaty relationship by entering a secret deal with the owners of the Rena which could result in what’s left of the stricken ship being left on Otaiti-Astrolabe reef.
It said the claimants were not considered or consulted.
Trust chair Umuhuri Matehaere says the report vindicates the trust’s decision to take the claim.
He says the Crown has effectively disregarded the Interim Report, which recommended the crown assist tangata whenua who wanted to challenge the bid by the owners to get a resource consent to leave the wreck on the reef.
