Ngati Porou chief executive Teepa Wawatai has confirmed the iwi has met Treasury officials since the election to discuss buying the 600 state houses in its rohe.
It’s working alongside Te Runanga o Turanganui-a-Kiwa, which wants to buy the rest of the 1300 houses in the East Coast region.
He says it’s part of building new communities, and the iwi would be in providing health and services to tenants, almost two thirds of whom are Maori.
