Akaroa clean up due

Sewage Akaroa Christchurch City Council wants to move Akaroa’s wastewater plant away from a site of significance to Ngai Tahu.
The iwi has long objected to the plant at Takupuneke, where about 200 of its tupuna were massacred in 1830.
The council has applied for a resource consent to build a $30 million plant north of the town, which will include a 2.5km ocean outfall to take the treated wastewater into the main channel of the harbour.
In recent years health officials have warned people not to swim or take shellfish from Akaroa’s main beach because of high levels of faecal bacteria in water samples.
