Rotorua only one option for Maori Television

Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell says the board of Maori Television needs to scope as many options as it can about its future home.
There has been alarm at news that the service has been talking to iwi and city leaders in Rotorua about moving the headquarters there, but chief executive Paora Maxwell says that is just one of the options being considered.
Mr Flavell says the Newmarket studios are costing Maori Television about $1 million a year, and they don’t offer room for growth.
He says it’s important the board gives a clear sense of where it is going in the long term.
"If it happens to be Rotorua, well so be it but, from what I have heard they are just flagging the options. They have to look around on the basis that they are paying a lot of money for rental and have got no plan, no possibility for expansion, which means is it better to hold Maori Television to where they are and not allow them to expand, versus moving out to some other place. It might be another place in Auckland but we have to give them an opportunity to expand," he says.
