Maori on sidelines in Labour trainwreck
Mana leader Hone Harawira is rejecting suggestions Maori voters have gone back to Labour in significant numbers.
While endorsing Nanaia Mahuta’s leadership bid, the former Te Tai Tokerau MP doubts she is a credible contender, and thinks the run is about positioning herself to become deputy.
Ms Mahuta has pointed to Maori support for Labour as being one of the few positives to emerge from the election, but Mr Harawira says the numbers say something else.
"A lot of Maori just didn't vote. They didn't want to vote National, they clearly didn't vote Mana but they didn't go across to Labour in enough numbers to make it worth while even voting. I think a lot of them said 'sort that out and then maybe we will come back to the table,' but right now it doesn't look like Labour is providing any clear direction on where to go," he says.
Mr Harawira says watching Labour’s internal struggles is like watching a train wreck and trying to count how many carriages fall over.
