Mana considers voting claim
Ousted Te Tai Tokerau MP Hone Harawira says a judicial recount will not be the end of his battle to get a fairer deal for Maori voters.
The recount has started in the Electoral Commission’s Takapuna office, and is expected to be completed by the weekend.
The Mana leader says he doesn’t expect to overhaul Kelvin Davis’s 739-vote majority, but he does want some answers about the conduct of the election, and especially about the number of special votes that were rejected.
That might need to be done in another forum.
"There are other avenues we need to take some of this thing to and we are considering the possibility of going to the Waitangi Tribunal over these Electoral Commission issues because we think some serious steps need to be taken to ensure that Maori people know that they can vote and to change the enrolment processes and the voting processes," Mr Harawira says.
He says if people are serious about wanting more Maori to vote, the system needs to change.
