Kahungunu puts lid on sports party

Wairoa to Wairarapa iwi Ngati Kahungunu is going dry.
Its gala Kahungunu Sports Award dinner in Hastings tomorrow night will be 100 percent alcohol free.
Chair Ngahiwi Tomoana says the ban was suggested by IronMaori founder Heather Skipworth, who has taken a no-booze approach to her own events.
He says the iwi is aware of the harmful effects alcohol has had on some talented elite local athletes.
Among this year’s winners who are in line for the ultimate sportsperson of the year award are Sevens star Gillies Kaka and world ranked rowing gold medalist Fiona Bourke.
World series softballer Courtney Gettings won the junior female award and Crossfit international winner Aidan Wake-Hope the junior men’s.
