Te Whare Matapuna picks in elite league
World class achievements in golf and league will be marked at the National Maori Sports Awards on November 29.
This year’s inductees into Te Whare Matapuna o te Ao Maori, the Maori Sports Hall of Fame, will be rugby league player Stacey Jones and golfer Philip Tataurangi.
Organiser Dick Garrett says they were clear picks because of their ongoing contributions.
"Stacey is doing so well now in coaching and he's got a final next Saturday. Philip is making his mark as a broadcaster worldwide in America on radio and TV and locally here on the golf shows and being a former amateur world champion, and Stacey's record is unheralded in rugby league", he says.
Jones played 46 tests for the Kiwis from 1995 to 2006 and scored 674 points during his 12 seasons with the Vodafone Warriors, a club record.
Tataurangi was the leading individual in the four who became the first New Zealand team to win the world amateur Eisenhower Trophy in Canada in 1992, and before a back injury ended his professional career he won the 1996 Australian PGA Championship and the 2002 Invensys Classic in Las Vegas.
Dick Garrett says nominations for other awards are open until the end of October.
