Davis looking for inspiration
Labour MP Kelvin Davis says the party needs to sort out its leadership quickly … and behind closed doors.
Labour caucus is meeting today to discuss how it will go forward now that David Cunliffe has forced a leadership contest by resigning.
Mr Cunliffe has put his name forward again, saying he wants a fresh mandate after leading the party to its worst ever electoral defeat.
The only other person to have put his hand up so far is former deputy leader Grant Robertson, although former leader David Shearer may also try again.
Mr Davis, whose win in Te Tai Tokerau should be confirmed this weekend, says he wants the debate to shift from personal ambition to what Labour needs to do to win in 2017.
"This whole argument about people voting for the left and people voting for the right, I think that's meaningless. I think there's a whole heap of people just waiting to be inspired and obviously we're not inspiring people so we need to start talking about the issues that really matter most to people, that get them emotional, and when we start talking about things that are relevant to our people, we wil find we lift from 24 and up to 34 and even higher in the polls," he says.
