Date set for Crown challenge to Paki sentence

The High Court has set aside a half day in November to hear a Crown appeal against the discharge without conviction of Korotangi Paki, son of the Maori King,
The 18-year-old was last month let off charges of burglary, theft and drink driving by Auckland District Court Judge Philippa Cunningham after his lawyer, Paul Wicks, QC, argued a conviction would ruin his chances of succeeding to the throne.
The judge also took into account that Mr Paki's co-accused in the burglary and theft case case had been discharged without conviction in Gisborne District Court after undergoing a restorative justice programme.
The four had stolen surfboards from a camping ground after a drinking session.
At the Koroneihana hui last week, King Tuheitia rejected suggestions the court had been soft on his son and said the case had been tainted by sensational and factually wrong media reports.
