Tuhoronuku ready for talks
Ngapuhi Runanga chair Sonny Tau has been voted chair of the newly-reconstituted Tuhoronuku, the body which will oversee Northland treaty claim settlement talks.
The 22 new members met at Opononi on Friday and Saturday, when they were addressed by Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson.
Mr Tau says the next task is to advertise for negotiators, as a requirement of both Crown and hapu is they not be Tuhoronuku members.
It will also start working on propoosals for a post-settlement governance entity.
"We’re going to put the runanga up as a possible PSGE. We might look at another structure. We'll put a couple of structures up for the iwi to choose from, and see where we go from there. I mean at the end of the day there's a lot of bridges to cross yet and a lot of rivers to swim," Mr Tau says.
