Parliament best place for Mark
Carterton mayor Ron Mark says the best way he can serve the people of Wairarapa is to get back into parliament.
He says he loves being mayor, but the big issues in local government are determined by decisions made at central government level.
Mr Mark didn’t stand in 2011 because he’d just been elected mayor, but this time he has accepted the offer from Winston Peters to go back on the New Zealand First list, as well as standing for the party in Wairarapa.
He says the break has been good.
"It’s given me the opportunity to go out and do my own thing and get myself permanently established quite independently from New Zealand First and show people my mettle. People are happy here. I got re-elected unopposed. But I think we've got to the point where the big stuff that's staring at us in Carterton can only be addressed in Parliament. Winston has always made it clear he'd welcome me back if I wanted to do that, so that’s where we are," Mr Mark says.
