Whanau focus fix for gang
A long time Black Power member says the National Government's new gang policy is driven by the imminent election rather than any evidence.
Dennis O'Reilly says Police Minister Anne Tolley has mashed together the threat of organised crime with the high levels of domestic violence experienced in whanau trapped within the gang lifestyle.
He says the government shouldn't try to police its way out of social problems.
" The question to ask I think of gang members is what do you want for your children so I think we work backwards from there. So what we really should be doing is focusing on whanau and making the gang issue irrelevant in the context. There may be gang members where that aint the issue, the issue is what do you want for your children " he says.
Dennis O'Reilly says organised crime and drugs are a separate problem that won't be fixed with a crack down on gangs.
