Future teachers’ reo tested

Te Taura Whiri I Te Reo Maori has welcomed a decision by Auckland University to proficiency test its Maori medium teacher trainees
Acting chief executive Pita Paraone says 73 of the education faculty’s students completed the Maori Language Commission’s level-finder exam in the largest sitting in recent years.
He says as almost three quarters of the students are future Maori immersion teachers, it’s critical their language ability is assessed.
The students can get more development if needed before they step out into classrooms.
Mr Paraone says the language quality and proficiency of teachers in Maori immersion education has been hotly debated.
