Maori Party upbeat on campaign
The polls say the Maori Party will be lucky to hang on to Waiariki, but the party’s general manager is counting on winning all seven Maori seats.
The party has its candidates in place, and they’ll be coming together next weekend to learn more about how to look good on the hustings.
Norm McKenzie says they will campaign on employment, health, affordable housing, a future for the young and family well-being.
He says door knocking for Tamaki Makaurau candidate Rangi McLean is going well, with voters telling the canvassers what they want to hear.
"At the end of the day it's all about kanohi ki te kanohi and getting out there. The feedback in the first lot of doorknocking for Rangi (McLean) for example, our people there knocked on 2000 doors, 870 people were home, of those 870 people 90-plus percent said they would vote for the Maori Party and for Rangi so we were pretty excited about that sort of feedback," Mr McKenzie says.
The latest One News Colmar Brunton puts support for the Maori Party at 1 percent, while iPredict gives Te Ururoa Flavell a 57 percent chance of retaining Wairaki.
