Prisons failing to tackle crime
A justice reform group says prisons aren’t making New Zealanders safer, and the system of imprisonment needs fundamental reform.
Just Speak last night launched its Unlocking Prisons report, recommending repeal of the three strikes law, raising the threshold for home detention sentences to three years, raising the Youth Court’s jurisdiction to 18 and extending the practices of the Rangatahi Courts to adult courts.
Spokesperson Lydia Nobbs says the debate is dominated by those who see prisons as a way to punish people.
She says that ignores what happens after people leave prison.
" We’re just interested in what is really going to achieve things like real crime prevention real accountable real remedies for people who have been affected by crime and real protection for New Zealand. We ultimately want New Zealand to be a safer society and the only way we're really going to do that is if we address some of the underlying causes of criminality and prisons are totally failing to do that " she says.
