Te Atiawa still debating settlement offer

Taranaki iwi Te Atiawa is preparing for hui round the country to discuss the treaty settlement it initialled last week.
The $91 million package includes a $1 million cultural fund and the right to buy various Crown properties in New Plymouth and Waitara.
Negotiator Wikitoria Keenan says it’s been a long journey, and there is still division in the iwi about some details.
She expects a lot of debate about the decision by negotiators to defer buying the Waitara Endowment Lands, the block where the first Taranaki War started, but it could be the best option long term.
"This time around we had to work with the Crown because the land is private land. In the future Te Atiawa can deal directly with the council which I think is much better for Te Atiawa. This settlement is all about the interests of Te Atiawa," she says.
Wikitoria Keenan is urging members to read the settlement on its website or on the Office of Treaty Settlements site.
