Mana launches Pasifika branch
The head of the Mana Party’s new Pasifika branch is expecting some surprises come election time.
James Papali’i, who stood for the party in Mangere last election, says his poor showing in that contest led him to rethink how the party needed to appeal to the various communities.
He says the mood at Saturday’s launch of the branch at Nga Whare Waatea shows the message of the Internet Mana alliance is starting to get through to many younger Pacifika people.
"I think Labour’s taken Pacific votes for granted for too long now and we’re not actually looking at Labour’s supporters, we’re looking at the young and those who haven’t voted. They need to be inspired to vote and that’s who we’re targeting," Mr Papali’i says.
Among the people who have put their hands up to be on the the list for Mana’s alliance partner the Internet Party is 40-year-old Bill Urale, better known as rapper King Kapisi.
