Water revenue live issue for iwi

An iwi negotiator says issues Ngati Tuwharetoa has identified over the use of Lake Taupo are common to iwi around the country.
The central North Island tribe has received an independent financial report showing that the free use of its lake bed by power firms has cost it up to $1.75 billion.
The figure will be used in negotiations with Mighty River Power.
Willie Te Aho from Te Whanau a Apanui says finding a fair system for the management and use of water and other resources is a live issue for iwi.
"In an area like Waikato or Taupo where more than 90 actually its more like 99 per cent of the allocations that have been used for commercial takes from the waterways have been allocated to others, then we need to look at a regime of compensation that actually recognise who those rights come from, " Mr Te Aho says.
