Sealord locks in Kahungunu quota
One of the largest holders of iwi quota has signed a new long term partnership agreement with Sealord.
Ngati Kahungunu spokersperson Mike Paku says rather than selling its annual catch entitlement each year to the highest bidder, the Wairoa to Wairarapa iwi will work with the Nelson-based company on the sustainable utilisation of its fishing quota.
The deal includes increasing training and employment and for Ngati Kahungunu throughout the fisheries value chain, starting with scholarships to the Westport Deepsea Fishing School.
Sealord Fishing general manager Doug Paulin says Sealord has been developing relationships with iwi through its Ihu to Mai programme, which is designed to increase the long term access to quota for Sealord and give iwi more direct influence over the way fishing assets are sustainably used.
The deal includes a range of species including hoki, bluenose, alfonsino, jack mackerel and oreo.
