Greens climate policy would benefit Maori

A medical lobby group has welcomed the Green Party’s climate protection plan as a specific, fair and realistic plan to curb greenhouse gas pollution.
Dr Rhys Jones and Dr Alex Macmillan from Ora Taiao: The New Zealand Climate and Health Council says other political parties need a similar commitment to what is a leading health challenge.
Dr Jones, from Ngati Kahungunu, says climate change is already contributing to the global burden of disease and premature death, with worse to come.
This is especially true for developing countries but also for Maori, Pacific and lower socio economic groups within New Zealand.
He says policies like housing insulation, clean energy, improved public transport and safer walking and cycle ways would give immediate health benefit and also lead the way on reducing carbon emissions.’
