Tikanga the right rongoa
The head of the panel that came up with a new set of standards for state-funded rongoa says tikanga will always trump standards.
Percy Tipene says those who are involved in traditional Maori healing through the use of traditional remedies or techniques are always conscious of the trust they hold as kaitiaki.
He says the regulations, which replace the first set drafted 15 years ago, will act as a guide.
" If you were to pitch nga tikanga mo rongoa and set that alongside the minimum standard thats required you see that tikanga has more indepth approach toward quality towards any activity relating to rongoa " he says.
Percy Tipene says Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia has done a good job in bringing together rongoa practitioners from around the country and getting support for them
