King’s advisors relish challenge
The chair of King Tuheitia’s new advisory council believes it has great potential as a vehicle for Maori to work together.
Hemana Eruera from Ngati Awa was chosen to head the Tekaumarua, which is made up of 12 respected elders and leaders of iwi around the country.
He says it was an honour to be asked to join, even though the nature of the task at hand is still evolving.
"It has some potential to lead us through under one leadership, perhaps looking at the Maori king as more or less the figurehead that we as Maori can align our business through to support each other and see what we can to to realise the potential of our people," Mr Eruera says.
Tekaumarua’s first big challenge will be supporting the national hui the king has called at Turangawaewae Marae at the end of the week to discuss the future of the kohanga reo movement.
