Tamararo Festival maintains vitality
Fourteen kapa haka from Turanga and East Cost area will this weekend battle it out in the Gisborne Events Centre for spots in next year’s Te Matatini national performing arts competition in Te Waipounamu.
Organising committee member Willie Te Aho says the Tamararo Festival is the oldest of its type.
"It was established in 1952 in the memory of Karaitiana Tamararo and it was at that time parishes of the Anglican church and it has broadened out now to include teams from as far afield as Hauiti, Uawa-Tolaga Bay, going south the Manutuke and inland to Te Aitanga a Mahaki and Waihirere so it’s a huge spread, it’s a hugely supported kaupapa," he say.
Among those at the festival will be Bishop Brown Turei, the sole surviving member of the original organising committee.
