Tuhoronuku nominations closing
Nominations for the body that will negotiate a settlement of Ngapuhi or Te Paparahi o Te Raki claims close on Friday.
As part of the process for accepting Tuhoronuku’s mandate, the Government insisted new elections be held for a reconstituted body that was independent of the Ngapuhi Runanga.
In response to concerns from within the iwi, the number of hapu representatives was increased to 15, and the runanga only has one representative appointed.
There will also be kuia and kaumatua representatives, and four representatives of Ngapuhi living outside the rohe.
The elections are being run by independent Christchurch company Electionz.com, with people able to vote by postal ballot, online, or at hui.
There is a two stage-process, with people voting for hapu kaikorero in April and May, and those kaikorero appointing the 15 hapu representatives in June at hui in each of the five regions.
