Iwi veto stirs up taniwha
Labour’s Maori spokesperson Shane Jones wants to stop the Auckland Maori Statutory Board from becoming the taniwha that stops progress in the super city.
He says a board-backed proposal in the Draft Auckland Unitary Plan to make 19 iwi into consent authorities when the land is considered of cultural and heritage value to Maori is not what he hand in mind when helping to write the Resource Management Act 25 years ago.
Mr Jones says that means one Puhoi landowner needs to get clearance from 14 iwi to renew a consent for a water bore because of the suspected presence of a taniwha.
"The notion that in order to get a relatively straightforward consent under the Resource Management Act, that applicants will have to see 19 tribes, that actually will cripple the resource management system," he says.
