New Zealander of the Year nominee Lance O’Sullivan says seeing the results of his initiatives gives him the incentive to go on.
The Kaitaia general practitioner has set up a low-cost health clinic, Te Kohanga Whakaora.
He is also the driving force behind the Manawa Ora Korokoro Ora school-based health clinic which offers medical care for up to 2000 children at 14 far north primary and intermediate schools.
"We see greater health gains for children greater health gains for whanau and its what I signed up for when I wanted to be a doctor. Its hard to fight around the bureaucracy of health especially for those with the greatest needs. You know sometimes you dont need to be a good doctor to serve the people you need to be politically connected and you need to have a bit of passion and drive and be prepared to take shot in the back as well as from the front " he says.
Dr Lance O’Sullivan will know if he has won the award on February 26.
