Speaker seeks change in kawa

Parliament's Speaker has sought advice on ways to modernise the Maori protocols at Parliament.
David Carter says Parliament needs a protocol that is modern and acceptable to a diversified Parliament.
He has asked parliament’s kaumatua, Rose White-Tahuparae, to produce a discussion paper.
The review was sparked by an incident at last year’s Youth Parliament, when parliament's longest serving woman MP, Annette King, and her Labour colleague Maryan Street were asked to move from the front bench during a powhiri.
The protocols were put in place 15 years ago with the oversight of the Wellington iwi, Te Atiawa.
Mr Carter says he wants Te Atiawa to talk to other iwi about the change.
